Kashan silk carpets are among the most famous and luxurious types of Persian carpets. They owe their renown to the city of Kashan, located in central Iran, which has been one of the most prominent centers of royal carpet weaving since the Safavid era (1501–1722 AD), when the first royal workshops for producing luxury carpets were established.
The History of Kashan Carpet Weaving
• The 16th Century: Carpet weaving in Kashan reached the pinnacle of its prosperity during the reign of Shah Abbas the Great.
• Royal Patronage: Carpets were woven for palaces, mosques, and high-ranking nobles.
• Exquisite Materials: Kashan became famous for using pure natural silk, occasionally intertwined with gold and silver threads in rare, exceptional pieces.
• Enduring Legacy: To this day, Kashan remains one of the most important centers for luxury handmade carpet production in Iran.
