Tabriz

Tabriz carpets represent one of the oldest, most prestigious, and technically diverse traditions of handmade Persian rugs, originating from the city of Tabriz in northwestern Iran. The city’s legendary carpet-weaving status dates back to the 16th-century Safavid era, when it hosted the royal workshops responsible for some of the greatest masterpieces in Persian history. It remains a global powerhouse for handmade carpet production today.

• Patterns: Tabriz rugs exhibit a wider variety of designs than almost any other Persian school. Iconic styles include the Mahi (Herati/fish) pattern, central medallions with cornerpieces (Lachak and Toranj), floral designs, hunting scenes, Persian gardens, and highly intricate pictorial carpets depicting landscapes and historical figures.
• Color Palette: Dominated by deep rich red, navy, ivory, gold, and green. Silk is frequently integrated to highlight decorative outlines in premium pieces.
• Composition: Woven using fine, high-quality wool known as Kurk wool, pure natural silk, or a blended wool-and-silk pile. While the warp and weft are typically cotton in standard wool rugs, they are made of pure silk in luxury tiers.
• Knot Style: Famously characterized by the symmetrical Turkish (Ghiordes) knot, a signature trait of the Tabriz school that grants the carpets incredible structural strength and exceptional crispness in detail.
